10 Great Reasons to Take Cold Showers

Reasons to Take Cold Showers

You might be wondering some of the many benefits of a cold shower. I’m here to tell you that if you have enough courage to do it, then you won’t regret it because it comes with several health, economical, and environmental benefits.

  1. It relieves depression.

Research from the Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine shows that cold showers stimulate several areas of the brain which may reduce levels of depression.

  2. It improves circulation.

A cold shower causes the blood to move towards the inner organs in order to keep them warm. After finishing the shower, while in a warmer state, the blood then rushes back towards the surface of the skin. This alternation between these temperatures stimulates the circulatory system which many scholars believe allows the circulatory system to remain healthier.

  3. It keeps skin healthier.

Hot water is known to dry out the skin which is one of the causes of ashy skin as well as skin irritations. Cold water also has the ability to make your skin look healthier by closing up your pores.

  4. It increases testosterone.

A study by Thrombosis Research Institute indicated that cold showers increased levels of testosterone which would allow for an increase in libido as well as greater potential for increased muscle mass.

  5. It increases energy levels.

After ending a cold shower you will typically feel more awake and full of energy. In order to combat the cold, the body’s sympathetic system engages in warming the body by releasing small amounts of adrenaline in order for the heart to start pumping faster. Because of this process a typical person will experience a burst of energy.

  6. It increases fertility.

Hot showers cause the testes to become too hot! The reason why the testes are outside of the core of the body is because sperm thrive in a slightly cooler temperature than the core. I’m sure you’ve heard that the sperm count of the typical American in recent years is dropping significantly. This is because of things like an increase use of hot laptops on the laps of many as well as prolonged hot showers. By taking a cold shower you may significantly increase your sperm count as well as their motility.

  7. It will improve your immune system.

A study by the Thrombosis Research Institute indicated that a daily cold shower increased levels of white blood cells, which are the cells within the body responsible for fighting foreign parasites.

  8. It may help you lose weight!

By stimulating your cardiovascular system a cold shower may speed up your metabolism. It has also been seen that a cold shower increases Brown Adipose Tissue quantities. This increase in BAT will allow your body to use a lot of its excess calories as heat during the cold shower process. This might allow for the use of more calories each day which can potentially allow you to lose several pounds a year.

  9. You could save money on electricity!

By using less hot water each day you could save a substantial amount of money each year. By using less electricity you are doing your part for the environment.

  10. You could save many gallons a day.

Typically people who take cold showers take a shorter amount of time in the shower. By decreasing the amount of time in the shower you could potentially save several gallons of water each day which could also reduce your water bill. Also, by reducing the amount of water you use you’re doing your part for the environment in preserving one of our most important natural resources.

Great article. I just read some similar research about cold showers–I think the article I read called them “Scottish showers” and “James Bond showers” because evidently James Bond always took cold showers in the books–haha! I believe you get many of the same effects just from ending your shower with cold water; that is, you can take a warm shower and then switch to cold water when rinsing your hair, etc., and you’ll still get some of the same benefits. I’m trying to work them in when I remember to. Side note–I was born in Gainesville. 🙂 Thanks for the follow!

Nice list! I love intensely warm water but it’s terrible for the environment and water and electric bills. For a while, I was taking warm showers and ending with cold water. I felt energized and awake in the morning. I noticed that when I tense up and try to avoid the cold, it’s more uncomfortable than when I breathe deep and slower. If you have poison oak, you want to take a cold shower (like you said, it closes the pores) so the oils don’t spread on your body.
